Please note:

Due to executive orders from the governor and the Michigan Supreme Court our office staffing has been reduced, and our attorneys are working remotely as much as possible. Consequently, there may be some delays in response to your voice messages, emails, and other communications. Please be aware, if you have an upcoming court date, talk to your attorney or contact the court to confirm the date and time as many have been adjourned. If your case is adjourned and you haven’t received a new date, please be patient, our office will notify you once it has been rescheduled.

Who We Are

The Kent County Office of the Defender is a private non-profit organization that is committed to excellence in the representation of indigent citizens charged with felonies. We have an experienced staff of twelve (12) attorneys whose sole function is to represent those defendants assigned to this office by the court. Our personnel policy prohibits the attorneys from doing any legal work outside of cases assigned by the court. As a result, our sole focus and effort is directed toward our indigent client, and not a retained client or other legal matter. We are the Kent County Office of the Defender, however we are not Kent County employees or state employees as are the judges and prosecutors.

Further, this office is committed to maintaining the attorney-client privilege. We cannot and will not discuss our client’s cases with anyone including family members or significant others. Learn More...
